The Deathless

An Historical Occult Mystery

Ponce de León searches for the Fountain of Youth only to discover an unspeakable evil that never dies. Only the remarkably brilliant ethnologist Harriette May Eddy dares to challenge the eternal spirit of the body-snatching Kamiri. The story is set over four hundred years from the time of Columbus in the West Indies to beginning of the 20th century on the west coast of Canada.

EXCERPT

Stevenson, suddenly aware he wasn’t alone, turned on the cot and faced the intruder who nevertheless continued to advance. The alcohol made it difficult for Stevenson to assimilate all the information at once – the huge black man, the colors he was painted, the pot, the obvious malice he intended. Stevenson didn’t think he recognized the monster as one of the bearers, though God knows he had never seen any of them decorated in war paint. Just the same he decided to call upon his authority as “boss man,” head of the dig, and rising on his elbows and reaching for his spectacles, as if they would give him greater command, he decided to put a stop to this nonsense immediately.
   “Go! Wrong place!” Stevenson ordered.
The painted man advanced, lifting the metal pot. Stevenson tried to kick free of the blankets wrapped around his legs.
“What is your name?” Stevenson demanded.
    “Lopez–” the monster said.
“Well, you’re in big trouble, Lopez.” Stevenson could not kick his legs free. He did not know any Lopez. “Damn it! I said go!”
The monster raised the cooking pot above Stevenson. Something rustled inside and jingled the lid.
Lopez spoke again. “From the Savior...”
He turned the pot upside down. The lid fell but was caught by the chain and dangled in mid-air above where Stevenson squirmed. The two-foot long, brightly banded red, yellow and black coral snake continued down onto Stevenson’s shirt.

“...A STIMULATING READ..”

“It’s a story about malevolent evil, eternal life, (Ponce de León is just one of the characters), spirit haunting, voodoo, bodies all over the place. It ranges from Florida to Cuba and winds up in turn-of-the-century Gold Rush Vancouver. It has a wonderfully strong female protagonist and it is exhaustively researched and detailed.”
